Bhotekoshi Rafting – 1 night 2 days
Bhote Koshi river originates in Tibet. The river flows out of the Lumi Chimi lake in Tibet. The rive known as Poiqu in Tibet when it enter Nepal it is called Bhote Koshi. Further downstream from Bahrabise it is called Sun Koshi. The Bhote Koshi is the upper river course of the Sun Kosi. Further down the main streams are joined by several river and finally become Sapta Koshi river.
White water rafting in Bhote Koshi river is one of the best short and exciting white water rafting in Nepal; perhaps in the world. The gradient of the river is steeper than any other river good for rafting in Nepal. It has gradient of 15 meter per kilometer. The gradient makes continuous rapids. Hence the rapids in the river are good for to rush your adrenaline. The rapids are continuous; it comes one after another. The experience is exciting and thrilling. If you have already done rafting in Trishuli, white water in Bhote Koshi is perfect choice. People love to do Kayaking too. When the river water volume is high the rapids are graded class IV-V and III at lower levels.
Volume of water is low from January to May. Fun rafting trip is best from January to May when the volume of water is in its lowest – it is three times less than in monsoon. The water volume is high from Sep to December therefore the current is swift and rafting is more adventure during this period. In the monsoon season, from June to August, the volume of water is very high; often this river get floods and debris. No rafting is possible during this period.
Trishuli river was the first river that was navigated for rafting in early 80s. Bhote Koshi got attention after Kodari border got prominence for tourist visit in early 90’s. Resorts and hotels in Dhulikhel brought added advantage for stopover for holiday makers.

River raft: It is an inflated rubber boat with several built in compartments for safety. It is very sturdy, rugged and made of high quality standard. On most day trip maximum number of participants are limited to 12 in a boat.
It is a fun and enjoyable trip: Whitewater rafting is amazing and fun trip. Most rubber raft in Nepal are self paddle. River guide gives instructions when to paddle and which side of the raft should paddle depending upon river current and rapids that the guide expected to negotiate. You will not be paddling furiously. Most of the time it is about 10 to minute minutes at the most. You are asked to paddle intermittently. You will be able to enjoy sceneic beauty of the river, dramatic landscape, canyons, wonderful waterfalls as float down stream.
It is not dangerous: Rafting in white water section of the river is not dangerous. Most dangerous moment are if the raft smash rocks, if it over turn, or get into swirling current. In such condition there are chances of getting injured. For safety reason the raft has safety ropes around its rim. You just have to hold the rope tight. Beside that you have to wear safety vest; it help you float in case you are thrown overboard accidently. You must wear helmet to protect your head; in case if accident happen it protects you from head injury. In the river occurrence of such accident are very rare. The trained and professional and river guide ensures safety of the members on the raft. This is their prime concern. Rafting is much safer than driving on the road. However, all participants have to be careful and take precaution.
When not to do rafting: It is important not to take a rafting in any of the rivers in Nepal closer to monsoon season. Because it is very difficult to know there is rain in the upper section of the river. If there is rain the river downstream can suddenly get upsurge. This can swept the boat accidently and put members in fatal danger.
Rafting is safe: The river is perfectly safe for non swimmer. The river guide ensures that he does not shoot heavy rapid for the safety of non-swimmer and other members on the trip who do not want to get into heavy rapids. Children below 10 years should not participate in any rafting. All participants must refrain from drinking alcoholic beverage during rafting except in the evening.

Bungy Jumping over Bhote Koshi river:
Trip can be combined with Bungy Jump. In combination with rafting Bungee jumping over the Bhote Kosi makes best ‘ultimate experience.’ Bungee Jump in Bhotekoshi is one of the world’s longest Bungee Jumps. It’s Asia’s 3rd highest Bungy jumping site. It is a 3 hours ride from Kathmandu. There are some limitation to do bungee jumping based on physical condition.
There are nice and pleasant camping style resorts for a retreat and recreation located along the river. Their locations are above Barabise about 100 kilometer from Kathmandu. The resorts has safari style spacious double tents for accommodation and central dining hall, almost similar to what you find in Chitwan jungle safari. It has pleasant environment suitable to give you a refreshing break. The camp access compounds are immaculately maintained. The resort have formal kitchen that serves exclusive meals. There are several activities based on nature and adventure depends upon interest and duration. The isolated location of the resort and the adventure activities offer unforgettable experience. The resorts are awesome place to stay with or without activities. The camp style resorts are good place for group interaction, family outdoor trip or simply to hang out with buddies.

Dhulikhel: There are many nice, beautiful and pleasant resorts and hotels in Dhulikhel. Stay an overnight in Dhulikhel to see beautiful sunset and sunrise view over the Himalaya and walk around Dhulikhel old town see and experience heritage of Dhulikhel.
Day 01: Drive to Bhote Koshi river (100 km) – 4 hour drive. Full day rafting. Overnight camping in the beach
Leave Kathmandu at 7 am. Drive to raft put in point at Baseri (95 km). It is 4 hour drive from Kathmandu. On the first day you will cover about 15 kilometer stretch of the river. In the upper section the river makes a steep and direct drop when it enters Bhote Koshi. The gradient gradually eases as the river approaches down-stream to Lamasangu. The upper section above Barabise is a narrow valley. There are steep hills on both sides of the river with scenic landscape. There are no big rapids to shoot but the rapids are excellent for white water.

Day 02: Raft to Dolalghat. After lunch drive back to Kathmandu (60 km) – 2 hour drive
After breakfast as soon the sun appears, 2nd day of rafting begins at 9.30am. Mostly it is easy ride in the down-stream of the river. You get through scenic beauty and peaceful environment. The river make easy and fun ride. The lower stretch is good for a pleasant and fun day trip. You stop at several places to take swimming or for leisure. Float to put out point near Dolalghat. Picnic lunch is served in the sandy beach. Leave Dolalghat at 2 pm. Drive back to Dhulikhel (28 km). It is about an hour drive. Take a break for about an hour at Dhulikhel and then drive back to Kathmandu (31 km). Reach Kathmandu at 5 pm.
